Start With One Jar: Baking Soda

Small shifts. Simple routines.

Five simple ways I use baking soda throughout my home, and why it was one of the first things I'd recommend if you're just starting to simplify.

At one point I had a different product for everything. Cleaners, deodorizers, even garbage disposal tablets. But over time I started simplifying what I brought into my home, and baking soda quickly became one of my go-to staples.

It’s multi-use, affordable, and can handle more than most people expect. Instead of filling your cabinets with separate products, one jar can take care of a lot.

1. Sink Cleaner

This is one of the easiest ways to refresh your kitchen.

I sprinkle baking soda directly into the sink, scrub it with half a lemon, and let it sit for 5 to 20 minutes. Then I add vinegar to let it fizz, scrub, and rinse. It leaves everything feeling clean without needing a separate product.

2. Garbage Disposal Freshener

I pour baking soda into the disposal, add vinegar, and sometimes citrus peels, then run it with hot water. It keeps everything smelling fresh naturally and replaces the need for another product in my home.

3. Oven Cleaner

Instead of using harsh oven sprays, I make a simple paste with baking soda and water, spread it inside the oven, and let it sit overnight. The next day I wipe it clean. For tougher spots I add a little vinegar. It works better than I expected and I don’t have to worry about what I’m spraying inside my oven.

4. Baking Staple

It’s not just for cleaning. Baking soda is something I always keep on hand for baked goods like cookies and muffins. It’s one of those ingredients that quietly does double duty without any extra effort.

5. Jar Label Remover (Keep & Repurpose)

Don’t throw out your pickle or jam jars. I clean them out and use this simple hack to remove the labels.

Mix baking soda with a little olive or coconut oil to create a paste, rub it onto the sticky residue, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe and rinse clean. It leaves jars ready to reuse for pantry staples, cleaning mixes, or DIY self-care. A small thing that makes repurposing feel easy.

Why It Simplifies My Home

Baking soda is one of those staples that quietly replaces more than you’d expect. It handles cleaning, deodorizing, and baking, and it even helps you repurpose what you already have instead of throwing it away. One jar, multiple uses, less to buy.

If you’re just getting started with natural cleaning, this and vinegar are the two I’d begin with. Together they replace so many products I used to keep on hand. You can read more about how I use vinegar here.

Disclaimer: Always test natural cleaning ingredients on a small area first and use ingredients carefully around children, pets, and delicate surfaces.
