I’ve always thought of hand soap as one of those products that couldn’t possibly be complicated. After all, it’s soap. It’s supposed to clean your hands.
But when I started paying closer attention to ingredient labels throughout my home, I was surprised by how much was actually in many liquid hand soaps. Fragrances, dyes, preservatives, and ingredients I couldn’t easily identify seemed to show up everywhere.
That’s what inspired this recipe.
I love that this hand soap uses just a few simple ingredients and comes together in minutes. Even better, it’s easy to customize depending on the scent profile you’re in the mood for. Lately, I’ve been loving this guava and eucalyptus combination because it feels fresh, clean, and a little bit spa-like without being overpowering.
Sometimes the simplest swaps end up becoming the ones you reach for every day.
Why Make Your Own Hand Soap?
Store shelves are filled with hand soaps containing synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives that most of us can’t pronounce and don’t really need. When you make your own, you control exactly what goes into it and get to choose a scent that actually feels like you.
Making your own is one of the easiest places to start simplifying your home. It lets you:
- Control exactly what goes into it
- Skip artificial dyes and harsh detergents
- Customize the scent to suit your home
- Save money over time
- Refill the same beautiful dispenser, less plastic, less waste
Ingredient Notes
Castile Soap — A plant-based soap traditionally made from olive oil, Castile soap is one of the most versatile ingredients to keep in your home. It cleans effectively and serves as the base for everything from hand soap to household cleaners.
Argan Oil — Frequent hand washing can leave skin feeling dry. Argan oil helps offset that, adding a touch of moisture and leaving hands noticeably softer. It’s optional, but worth including.
Guava Essential Oil — Light, tropical, and a little unexpected. Guava adds the sweetness that makes this soap feel distinct without tipping into anything artificial or cloying.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil — Fresh, clean, and slightly medicinal in the best way. Eucalyptus is what gives this blend its spa-inspired quality.

Why We Love This Scent Combination
Guava brings a subtle tropical warmth that feels special without being overwhelming. Eucalyptus adds a clean, spa-like note that grounds the blend and keeps it feeling crisp. Together they create something that makes a simple daily routine feel a little more intentional, the kind of scent you notice, appreciate, and then go about your day.
The scent we were going for was a soft balance: sweet without being sugary, fresh without being sharp.
What I Used: I made this hand soap in this glass soap dispenser and have been really happy with it. You can find it here.
Storage
Store at room temperature. If separation occurs, give it a gentle swirl before use. That’s completely normal. Because this recipe is mostly water-based, use it within one to two months and keep it in a clean dispenser.
A Simple Swap Worth Making
This soap is The JARS Method in action: a short ingredient list you can actually read, a refillable routine that saves money, and a small daily ritual that makes your home feel a little more like you.
Sometimes simplifying isn’t about doing more. It’s about making small swaps that quietly add up. And sometimes the simplest swap is the one that sticks.
Disclaimer: This recipe is intended for external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Avoid contact with eyes. Essential oils and fragrance oils may not be suitable for all individuals, especially those with sensitivities. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
