When the weather warms up, the ants come marching in and in my house, they head straight for the kitchen. With a dog at home and food on the counter, reaching for a harsh chemical spray wasn’t something I wanted to do. So I set out to find something that actually works without the ingredients I’d rather not have around my family, my pet, or the food we eat every day.
What I landed on takes less than five minutes to make, uses ingredients I already had on hand, and has made a real difference in keeping them out of the kitchen. I keep mine in a reusable glass spray bottle under the sink so it’s always ready when I need it.
Why This Recipe Works
White vinegar and essential oils like peppermint, tea tree, and cinnamon carry strong scents that ants avoid. Together they create a barrier that’s effective and free of harsh chemicals.
That’s the idea behind The JARS Life: versatile ingredients you already have, used in more ways than one.

Peppermint disrupts ant trails and discourages them from returning. It’s one of the most well-known natural ant deterrents.
Tea tree adds another scent layer while freshening areas where pests tend to gather.
Cinnamon is particularly effective because ants strongly dislike its aroma. It also pairs well with peppermint for a warm, clean smell. I use the essential oil and also add a cinnamon stick to the bottle as well.
Eucalyptus (optional) rounds out the scent barrier and works well if you already keep it stocked for other uses.
A Note on Prevention
Spraying alone isn’t enough. For best results, pair this with basic habits: wipe up crumbs promptly, store food in sealed containers, and identify where ants are entering your home. The goal is to make your home less inviting, not just to react when ants appear.
