A rich, whipped DIY hair mask made with simple, nourishing ingredients. After trying so many expensive “clean” hair masks that never fully delivered, this homemade version genuinely surprised me with how soft, moisturized, and healthy my hair felt afterward.

I spent way too long searching for a hair mask that actually worked without ingredients I didn’t love. The clean ones never delivered. The ones that delivered were never clean. And the ones that did both? Way too expensive.

So I made my own.

This whipped hair mask is deeply moisturizing, softening, and customizable depending on your hair type and scent preferences. The texture ends up somewhere between a butter and a cloud once whipped, and a little goes a long way.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect it to be this good. But it’s one of the first DIY versions that actually felt close to a salon-quality mask, using ingredients I personally feel good about. The whipping process alone is deeply satisfying. Think homemade icing… except for your hair.

Jojoba oil helps mimic the scalp’s natural oils

Broccoli seed oil gives your hair that silky, coated feeling naturally

Rosemary essential oil gives an earthy, grounding scent

I also added guava and grapefruit for scent because I wanted something that felt fresh and elevated without using artificial fragrance. That same shift away from synthetic fragrance is also what inspired my simple natural perfume alternative.

How to Use

Apply to clean, damp hair focusing mainly on the mid-lengths and ends. Leave on for 5–10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For extra hydration, you can also apply to dry hair before shampooing and leave on longer for a deeper treatment.

If your hair is fine, start with a smaller amount since this mask is very rich.

Notes

I customized the essential oils mostly for scent preference, but you can absolutely adjust this recipe to fit your own routine.

  • Skip the grapefruit for a warmer scent
  • Add lavender for a softer herbal profile
  • Use less rosemary if you’re sensitive to strong essential oils
  • Keep it unscented if preferred

Storage

Store in an airtight glass jar away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Because this recipe does not contain water, it has a longer shelf life than many homemade beauty products, but always use clean, dry hands when scooping from the jar.

If your house gets very warm, the texture may soften slightly. You can refrigerate it briefly to firm it back up.

A Few Things to Know

This is a rich, oil-based hair mask made with natural ingredients, so the texture and feel will be different from conventional store-bought formulas that contain silicones or synthetic stabilizers.

  • You may need to shampoo twice to fully rinse it out
  • Fine hair may prefer a lighter application

DIY Rich Hair Mask

A rich, whipped DIY hair mask made with nourishing butters and oils for soft, deeply moisturized hair. This homemade treatment is customizable, deeply conditioning, and made with simpler ingredients you can feel good about using.

Servings 1 8 oz Jar

Equipment

  • Hand Mixer
  • Heat Safe Bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 8 oz amber glass jar
  • Double boiler optional

Ingredients
  

  • 3/4 cup shea butter
  • 1/3 cup mango butter
  • 1/4 cup jojoba oil
  • 2 tbsp argan oil
  • 1 tbsp broccoli seed oil
  • 2 –3 full droppers rosemary essential oil
  • Optional: 3 full droppers guava fragrance or essential oil
  • 5 –10 drops grapefruit essential oil

Instructions
 

  • Add the shea butter and mango butter to a heat-safe bowl and melt gently using a double boiler or microwave in short intervals, stirring between each round.
  • Stir in the jojoba oil, argan oil, and broccoli seed oil.
  • Allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding the essential oils.
  • Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes until partially solidified.
  • Whip with a hand mixer until light and creamy.
  • Transfer to an 8 oz amber glass jar for storage.
