When I reached the end of a jar of homemade berry chia jam, there was just a spoonful clinging to the sides, enough to flavor a salad dressing. Instead of rinsing out the jar, I decided to turn it into salad dressing.
One of my favorite ways to reduce waste in the kitchen is to use every last bit of something before washing the container. The leftover jam added just enough berry flavor and natural sweetness to create a simple dressing that came together in less than a minute.
If you’ve made homemade chia jam before, this is a great way to stretch the last spoonful. Just add the dressing ingredients directly to the jar, shake, and pour. This blackberry chia jam dressing works as a simple berry vinaigrette for arugula, spinach, mixed greens, grain bowls, and roasted vegetables.

Why You’ll Love This Dressing
- Uses up the last bit of berry chia jam
- Made with simple pantry ingredients
- Takes less than a minute to make
- No refined sugar needed
- Sweet, savory, and tangy
Ways to Use This Dressing
- Arugula or spinach salads
- Mixed greens with cucumber
- Grain bowls
- Roasted vegetables
- Drizzled over parmesan and crackers
- As a dipping sauce for crusty bread

The leftover jam folds right into the dressing, creating a lightly sweet berry vinaigrette without any extra bowls or dishes to wash.
For the salad pictured, I used arugula and cucumber served in one of my favorite shallow pasta bowls. The peppery arugula pairs really well with the sweetness of the berry dressing.
This recipe makes just enough for a personal or side salad. It also works beautifully over a small grain bowl or roasted vegetables. And if you want to save any for later, a small mason jar is perfect for shaking and storing.

A Simple Way to Waste Less
I love finding small ways to get more use out of what I already have. Using the jam jar as the mixing bowl means one less dish, nothing wasted, and a dressing that comes together in seconds. It’s a tiny shift, but those are often my favorite kinds.
